Lore
The Cathedral Monk holds the title Brother of the Inner Cloister at the Solstice Cathedral of Aurel-on-the-Hill, a rank achieved by completion of the seven-year silent training and confirmed by the dean's seal rather than by ordinary novice-progression. His given name, used inside the cloister and only there, is Brother Thaden; outside the cloister he answers to 'Brother' and to nothing else, a discipline the Cathedral has not asked him to relax even on field deployment. The Cathedral's deployment-clerks have noted that this complicates muster-roll administration; the Cathedral has not corrected the complication.
His combat-grant is the cloister's old training-form known as 'one motion, two ends': the same swing of the open hand that opens a benediction can break a fortress wall when the discipline-state is correctly held. The form is taught to perhaps twelve monks per generation and only three of those typically achieve the discipline-state under field-pressure. Brother Thaden is one of the three in his generation, and the only one of the three currently on field deployment. His battlefield presence is recorded by Empire formation-commanders not by what he does (which is rarely visible) but by what does not happen — formations under his cover do not break, formations under his cover do not panic, formations under his cover do not need to be re-dressed after impact.
He shares a regimental chapel with Iselm Hadric (char_holy_paladin) and has been the priest-of-record for two of her three Dawn Oath dawn-rituals — a pairing the Cathedral chose deliberately, on the grounds that Iselm's oath-reserve testing requires a tester who can hold the discipline-state in the same room without contributing to the test. He has heard, but has not relayed, that Iselm has filed two complaints through the Dawn Oath chain about Devren Korr's (char_court_mage) Cult-purge sweep. The Cathedral has instructed him not to relay; he has not relayed.
