Lore
The Swamp Witch was born in the second-row cottage of a marsh village so far inside the Mother Bog that the imperial cartographers list it as conjectural. She is forty-seven this season; her grandmother lived to ninety-three, which the village reckons as middle age. The hex-witch tradition she practices is the kind that resolves over weeks. The Bog Curse she lays on a man is not designed to kill him in the engagement — it is designed to be the reason his sword arm forgets a draw three skirmishes from now, on a night when he is also tired, and the weather is also wrong, and the company he is fighting alongside is also new.
Slow magic is unfashionable. The young hex-witches she trained in the village all left for the Crimson Hand or the Abyssal Cult's faster-moving covens, and the ones who came back came back broken. The Swamp Witch did not leave. She gathers her materials the same way she has for thirty years — bog-rosemary at the third moon, knuckle-bones at the fifth, certain marsh-snail shells that have to be picked at dusk and not earlier. She will not tell a client which of those ingredients ended up in their working, and she does not always know herself; the Cauldron Deluge ritual is improvisational by design, and she has performed it eighty-three times.
The Abyssal Cult's coven-master in the Vesper district has tried twice to recruit her into a faster, more centralized practice and has been told no in increasingly polite ways. She suspects the third refusal will be the one that brings him in person. She has prepared a gift for that visit: a knot-charm she expects him to recognize, plus a kettle of bog tea that she will not drink with him. When he leaves, the charm and the tea will both still be on the table. He will know what both of those things mean, and he will not, in her estimate, come a fourth time.
